Life as it comes at me

Way to go, Mom! April 21, 2008

Filed under: low carb — sarilas @ 5:00 pm

My kids’ words to me upon telling them that I’m sick of being sick and tired and FAT.  I’ve had my blood work done, I realize some key things (carbs are BAD for me.  Not “not good” but harmful and destructive) and I’m making a lifestyle change to lower my overall carb intake.  To jump start things and aid in the loss of this 100+ pounds I need to lose I’ve picked up the Atkins torch (again, for the last time)!  I have used Atkins as a diet, and always had joyous results (improved blood work, weight loss; at one point many moons ago I lost enough weight and was motivated enough that I used to RUN.  On purpose.  For FUN).  This time really IS different though.  This time I’m making a lifestyle change.  I realize that sugar and carbs are like crack cocaine to me.  If I don’t change my ways I’ll be overweight AND diabetic AND really really miserable.  So change,  here I come.

I started on the 17th and I’m down 4.5 pounds thus far.  I’m pleased with ANY weight loss at this stage of the game!

    Keith sent me this picture:

In 1998, over the course of Spring I lost 50 pounds, winding up at the lean 175 you see in the photo. Sam gave me a picture from that period and I looked sickly. It turns out I was actually sick when it was taken (or hung over or something. I _was_ 21 years old at the time!). Here I look good though!

Anyway Keith asked me if it was inspiring or depressing. I picked inspiring. Colleen and I are now on a bit of a dietary restriction, much like I was at the time I lost all that weight.

At my peak I was losing 2 pounds per day (no kidding). Well, it’s been a week and I’ve lost 3, but I haven’t reached my peak yet.

Want to race to the first 50?

WOW – dude I don’t have ANY pictures of me as an adult and being thin. Or even just not overweight. From the time I had Kyle (at 21) to now (at nearly 34) I’ve been fat and fatter. It’s fluctuated a lot over the years but still…

And we can call it a race if you want it to but you’re younger AND you’re male! You’ll totally hit 50 before me!

I want to hear more about what you and Colleen are doing… I do love ideas!

My goal at this point is to get down to 160. That’s not even skinny, but it’s a hell of a lot healthier than what I am now.
