First Communion - K and T

First Communion Meanderings April 30, 2008

Man have I been off track since Saturday- the kids had their First Communion at Church that day, and I put together a little spread for our friends who came to hang out with us in honor of that.  Luckily for me, even with burger sliders and ice cream I didn’t gain any weight.  I stayed on plan but with treats added into it - no weight loss, but no weight gain.  I’ll take it!

Had to cover up the wisteria vine last night; we had a freeze warning in effect.  How bizarre is that?  A freeze warning at this time of year in Tennessee?  But everything appears to have survived.  I’m looking forward to building those raised beds I’ve talked about and planting more.  Hopefully soon.

Jose is off of work today - his colon had a meeting with a camera yesterday and he’s supposed to take the day off.  It’s nice to have him home, especially since he’s out of school till the 12th of May!  His portfolio review really was a smashing success - and we found out that he is the first student to ever receive all three top awards at his school!  I’m very proud of him.

Tatiana nearly won her softball game yesterday.  8-9 is a heck of a lot more fun for the girls than 0-20!  Now if the 5th grade girls would stop gossiping about my 6th grade son during the games I wouldn’t be having that “oh my God, my kid is going to be dating soon” nervous breakdown…

7 days April 24, 2008

I’ve been on Atkins Induction phase for seven days now.  I honestly thought it was longer than that.  Trust me, it’s not EASY to deny yourself the things you’re used to sedating yourself with.  I baked upwards of FOUR DOZEN chocolate cupcakes on Tuesday for Tatiana’s Girl Scout troop, and I SO wanted to lick my fingers, but I wouldn’t do it.  Not one iota of sugar touched my lips and THAT is a feat in and of itself!  I’m a huge sugar junky.  Sugar is my crack.  Some people drink to sedate their emotions, I eat crappy food.  It puts me in a little sugar coma and takes the pain or fear or whatever I’m feeling away.  Well for the last week I’ve allowed myself to FEEL the emotion, work through it and not give in to the carb urge.  And my reward for seven days of self discipline?

….. an 8 pound loss!  I’m thrilled with that.  8 pounds…  My KIDS weighed 8-ish pounds at birth.  I just lost an newborn-worth of weight in one week.  Most people shoot for that much in a MONTH.  I’ll stick to my sugar crave kicking, white flour dissing low carb way of eating, thanks!

Way to go, Mom! April 21, 2008

My kids’ words to me upon telling them that I’m sick of being sick and tired and FAT.  I’ve had my blood work done, I realize some key things (carbs are BAD for me.  Not “not good” but harmful and destructive) and I’m making a lifestyle change to lower my overall carb intake.  To jump start things and aid in the loss of this 100+ pounds I need to lose I’ve picked up the Atkins torch (again, for the last time)!  I have used Atkins as a diet, and always had joyous results (improved blood work, weight loss; at one point many moons ago I lost enough weight and was motivated enough that I used to RUN.  On purpose.  For FUN).  This time really IS different though.  This time I’m making a lifestyle change.  I realize that sugar and carbs are like crack cocaine to me.  If I don’t change my ways I’ll be overweight AND diabetic AND really really miserable.  So change,  here I come.

I started on the 17th and I’m down 4.5 pounds thus far.  I’m pleased with ANY weight loss at this stage of the game!

That was Tatiana’s team’s score last night when she returned from Softball.  It didn’t seem to phase her one bit.  She fouled out on her one attempt at bat and she still was as happy as a clam to have just BEEN there.  Sporty Spice she’s not, but she sure loves playing one for the team!

Abnormal Wednesday April 16, 2008

Wednesdays here are usually hectic - Tatiana has Girl Scouts, Kyle has Art/Drama.  Today neither of them had any after school activities so they’re both home, enjoying our warm weather (let’s hope it stays after the 30 degree nights we’ve been experiencing).

Tatiana’s day included a group-swinging activity on the new playground equipment.  She and some other girls were swinging each other on the tire swing (spinning it with multiple girls riding) and it broke - with two girls on it.  I didn’t ask where it broke, if it was rope or what…  This qualifies as a need to know basis and I SO don’t need to know…

Kyle tells me he dove for a base while at PE and ended up with a ball to the face; that will go well with his black eye from a little bruhaha he had earlier in the week.  Ah, to be young and hormonal again.

The Nintendo DS and games were missing from his backpack, by the way.  Tomorrow during class Coach Finch is going to help him try to figure out who stole it.  I think it’s a long shot, but then hey - I’m a big ol’ skeptic so what do I know.  That boy of mine is one of the most positive people I’ve ever met - let him have his hopes.

Tax Day Brings About A Reunion And New Beginnings April 15, 2008

Kyle set his backpack down after school yesterday, to go talk to a teacher. When he came back the bag and its contents (science project work, textbooks and a Nintendo DS Lite with two games) were gone and everyone pleaded ignorance as to its whereabouts. Drama ensued.

Received a phone call a little while ago from St. Darlene, the middle school receptionist who told me that when Kyle came in today to get his ADHD medication he told her that his backpack had been found - another boy was holding on to it for him. We assume all the contents were there based on what she said was his very cheery attitude.

Then she relayed to me one of the things that mothers love to hear, more than just about anything in the world (aside, I suppose, from hearing your lottery numbers called on Saturday night). She said that when he came in the room, he asked her if she was alright, that she didn’t seem to be her normally perky self. She told him she was a little down today, but she’d be fine and thanked him for asking about her.   He gave her a hug and went on with his day.

Nobody else in the school, faculty, staff or student had noticed her demeanor that day, but 12 year old Kyle had, and made an effort to let her know it. We agreed what an amazing boy he is, and I immediately decided to sit down and start this blog so that he and his sisters will someday be able to look back at day to day life, tears, laughter and all my fanatical rantings.
